Final Impressions: Saki: The Nationals

Japan News - Sat, 04/12/2014 - 18:00

The final episode of Saki: The Nationals doesn't really feature much in terms of climatic wrap-up. The series end with a giant standing nod to the other half of the story: the Episode of Side A. And maybe that's for the best.

Saki is the sort of sports-like anime where intense moment-to-moment moves turn the tides of the story, from Richii, Ron and Tsumo. Mythical powers and solid statistical play are the rules of the day. But at the same time, a large contingent of us are watching Saki for the inter-character sub-plots. Who befriended who? What's this girl's story? And in that sense, Saki tells a story no different than what you might find on a sports program on TV. So in that sense, the last episode felt like a behind-the-scenes video of what happens in this world's premium sport, appropriately.

The Seven Deadly Sins manga gets an anime series

Japan News - Sat, 04/12/2014 - 16:00

Nanatsu no Taizai, or better known as The Seven Deadly Sins, is a manga by Nakaba Suzuki. It's about a princess who discovers the truth about her king guards, and is forced to run away. She is trying to find the sins to help her regain her kingdom back.

Well, Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine just announced that this lovey manga is finally getting its own anime adaption. The manga itself has about 3 million copies in circulation, which is a lot if you ask me! So there is no doubt that the anime is getting quite some hype, especially from fans of the manga. Kodansha's magazine will be publishing the eighth book compilation, which will have a bonus story with the Fairy King. You can catch that next Thursday!

No word on when the show will premiere, but I'm sure it won't be long before we know!

Half Minute Hero II: The Second Coming – More Isn’t Better

Siliconera - Sat, 04/12/2014 - 15:30

It’s been five years since the original Half Minute Hero released.  Five years is a long time to wait for a sequel, and an especially long time to wait for the sequel to a portable game that used simple sprites.  Five years is a long time to wait for the sequel to one of the best JRPGs on the PSP.  Or maybe one of the best action games on the PSP.  For a while it didn’t look the sequel was going to be localized at all, another casualty of the Sony handheld’s western market woes.

Burlesque show inspired by Cowboy Bebop premieres early May

Japan News - Sat, 04/12/2014 - 15:00

I love me a good burlesque show. Artful stripping to themes that are close to my heart? Please, give me more! It's one of the reason why I loved both Cosplay Burlesque shows when they were featured at Otakon several years back.

If you're in Seattle on May 2, you'll have the opportunity to watch a burlesque show inspired by Cowboy Bebop. Titled "The Real Folk Blues," the show is produced by Unnatural Redhead Productions, a company that focuses on bringing amusingly themed burlesque shows to the Seattle area. If you're interested, tickets will run you $12 on pre-sale and $15 at the door. VIP tickets, which include priority seating and special grab bags, go for $20 & $25. There's a showing at 7 p.m. and at 8:30 p.m.

Impressions: Bodacious Space Pirates: Abyss of Hyperspace

Japan News - Sat, 04/12/2014 - 14:00

I firmly believe that Satelight's scifi space opera, Bodacious Space Pirates, is a series that deserves a better name. Even the original novel's title (Miniskirt Space Pirates) betrays the actual content of the show. Hell, I was more than ready to write this franchise off entirely because the title screamed raunchy. The only reason I gave it a shot was because Tatsuo Sato's involvement. Many of you are probably most familiar with him from his work on the fantastic Martian Successor Nadesico series and film.

I'm glad I gave Bodacious Space Pirates a fair shot, because it ended up being one of my favorite TV anime from 2012. Just the right mix of great characters and scifi edge, BSP was a show that played its subject matter completely straight. It took the time to flesh out its world and cast rather than focus on action, resulting in a wonderfully epic coming of age tale.

Part 1 of Attack on Titan film compilation duology releasing this winter

Japan News - Sat, 04/12/2014 - 13:00

Had enough of Attack on Titan yet? I didn't think so, but just in case, here's a bit of news that'll either have you squealing your head off in fangirlish glee or shaking your head in disappointment that yet another series is being piledriven directly into the ground after having already saturated the industry with spinoffs, OVAs, and merchandise. Ready?

A theatrical version of Attack on Titan is hitting theaters, split into two parts. Attack on Titan the Movie: Part 1: Crimson Bow and Arrow, and Attack on Titan the Movie: Part 2: Wings of Freedom will be compiling the 25-episode anime series into two films, with the first releasing this winter and the second in 2015. The first movie, Crimson Bow and Arrow, will span episodes 1-13, with the second movie collecting 14-25. Footage will be re-edited with a new dub and 5.1-channel remaster, but what's going to change, really?

At GDC earlier this year, we got to take a look at Korean social 2D online game Dragon Blaze. The game’s big draw is your ability to manage and handle different skill cooldowns for your party. Publisher KOG Games is looking to bring it to the West by the third quarter of this year.
